We not only "re-cycle" bikes for Christmas we put on bicycle rodeos and attend most bicycle charity events around Naples each year to do free repairs on the participants' bikes.
We have bikes to build but no one to do the work, and funds running low to buy parts. We are working with only four volunteers (that includes me) and with a budget that is off by over 80 percent. This year will be one of my worst production years in the 30 years I have been doing Bikes For Tykes. This is what the spirit of giving is all about this time of year - making our community stronger and a better place to raise our families, or just sitting back and enjoying our retirement years in a community for which we can be proud. I fell in love with this community many years ago, and I know that if we all do some small thing, together we can accomplish great things. We all need to do a small part somehow and in some way.
I do not profess to have the answers for this problem, but I know that if I do not try to do my small part, things will never get better. I understand, however hard it is, try to explain that to a 10-year-old who wakes up Christmas Day that there is nothing from Santa Claus. We have lost many of our volunteers who used to come down for the season, and when we try to find replacements for the ones we lost, it seems no one has time to get involved because of having to make a living or for personal reasons. This long recession has hurt us all and Bikes For Tykes is no different.
